Over 200 photographs will go under the hammer at the 10th WestLicht Photography Auction on 21 March. All lots are on display at WestLicht Museum during the Preview, starting on 8 March. The selection includes numerous icons and precious examples from the early days of photography and thus offers an exciting overview of the history of the medium.
Wanda Wulz’s self-portrait Io + Gatto (1932), a montage of a photo of her cat Pippo with an image of herself, is one of the most famous double exposures in photo history. Only three other copies of this surrealist masterpiece are known worldwide.
In 1896, Josef Maria Eder and Eduard Valenta published the portfolio Versuche über Photographie mittelst der Röntgen’schen Strahlen. The 15 photographically captured, needle-sharp X-ray images of fish, amphibians and reptiles are not only an exciting scientific testimony, but also due to their perfect photogravure technique and elegance, they are the most recognized icons in this field.
The Preview offers the chance to marvel at classics from August Sander’s unparalleled atlas People of the 20th Century: two unusually large-format prints – the Handlanger and the Jungbauern – will be up for auction.
Many great Magnum photo journalists are present with some of their most well-known images: Eve Arnold (Marilyn Monroe, 1960), Erich Lessing (Dwight D. Eisenhower, Genf 1955), Henri Cartier-Bresson (Sevilla, 1933), Werner Bischof (Famine India, 1951), Robert Capa (D-Day, Omaha Beach, 1944) George Rodger (Nuba Wrestlers, Sudan 1949) and Dennis Stock (James Dean, 1955).
A beautiful selection of rare and sought after photobooks complements the auction, among those are signed first editions of Photographs by Man Ray 1920-1934 Paris (1934) and William Klein’s New York (1956).
Our independent team of experts guarantees the accurate valuation and description of the individual photographs.
To start the Preview on 7 March, 6 pm, our expert Prof. Johannes Faber will give an exhibition tour. If you would like to take part in the tour, please register with schartmuellerwestlicht.com
