From his early black-and-white street photographs to his iconic color portraits, Bruce Gilden talks about the beginnings of his career, the street as both stage and arena, and the honesty that comes with direct photographic confrontation.

With his unmistakable visual language, Bruce Gilden is one of the major figures in street photography and among the most uncompromising portraitists of our time. For more than five decades — and since 1998 as a member of Magnum Photos — he has turned his camera toward those who usually remain in the shadows: society’s outsiders, nonconformists, and marginal figures. Through radical closeness and unflinching directness, he creates powerful images that confront, unsettle, and move us.
