Artist Talk with Maša Stanić

Serbian-Austrian photographer Maša Stanić spoke on 29 September during an artist talk about her long-term project “Call it Dubai,” which is on display in the upper gallery alongside the 2026 World Press Photo exhibition. In addition to more images from the series, she also offered a first glimpse into her documentary film project, created in parallel with the photo series in the Vuka Vrčevića Roma settlement on the outskirts of Belgrade.

In conversation with WestLicht curator Nike Bekemeier, Stanić reflected on the long process of getting to know the neighborhood’s residents and the close friendship that has since developed. Humorous moments of everyday life, resilience, and solidarity were just as central to the conversation as the specific social and political challenges the community faces.
