PODIUM | PLASTIC PLANET: Are we drowning in plastic waste?
Plastic Pollution, Film and Politics
10 million tons of plastic enter our oceans every year, threatening to suffocate marine life. The Danube alone carries 40 tons of plastic waste into the Black Sea annually.
An early and powerful wake-up call came in 2009 with the award-winning documentary “Plastic Planet” by Werner Boote, which brought the catastrophe to light and raised global public awareness. But what has changed since then? Fifteen years later, has society acted on this knowledge?
These questions were discussed by Federal Minister Norbert Totschnig (Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management), filmmaker Werner Boote, and Prof. Dr. Lukas Kenner, who researches the health effects of microplastics on humans at the Medical University of Vienna.
Topics included microplastic production caused by driving, the responsibility of policymakers, and deeper scientific and semiotic insights.
Many thanks to everyone who took part in the event.
